Montana, "The Treasure State" in the fourth largest state in land area, yet it is ranked 44th in population. A beautiful land, with the Rocky Mountains in the west and gently rolling plains in the east, Montana sports a cool, dry climate most of the year. In 1742 the French were the first to visit the region, and the U.S. acquired the land in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Regions of the state were also purchased by Lewis and Clark in their exploration from 1805 to 1806. By the early 19th century, missionaries and fur traders had established posts along the foot hills region. Indian attacks and skirmishes became a constant problem for the early settlers, reaching its peak at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. By 1883, with the North Pacific Railway, came growth and population expansion. One of the most spectacular sites to see in Montana is Glacier National Park, with 60 glaciers, 200 lakes and an abundant supply of trout streams. Yellowstone National Park has three of its five entrances in Montana. Some Famous Montanans include: Gary Cooper, Chet Huntley, Mike Mansfield, Brent Musberger and Lester Thurow. @
